THIS IS THE WORST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE
He went to see the mirror again the next night, but John was already there. He tried to slip away before John could see him, but it was too late – he already turned around. John’s face reddened when he saw who it was. “Oh, it’s you.”
Sherlock cleared his throat and stepped forward. He glanced at the mirror. Same image as yesterday, the two of them in their tuxedos, exchanging rings. John looked back at the mirror as well. “I’ve heard various rumors of what it is we see in the mirror. Do you think….do you think it’s supposed to be our future?”
Sherlock looked over at John. “No. According to Dumbledore it shows us nothing more or less than the deepest, most desperate desire of our hearts.”
John looked disappointed. “Oh.”
Before he thought better of it, Sherlock blurted, “What do you see?” Stupid, stupid! If John answered, he’d probably ask Sherlock what he saw.
John licked his lips, hesitating. “I see…um…me with my shoulder uninjured. My hands are steady. I’m wearing a surgical gown.” Sherlock knew immediately that he was lying. John had asked if it showed their future, and he knew very well that such a scenario was not possible. “What do you see?”
Why was John lying? Why would he not want Sherlock to know what he desires? Should he lie to John? Sherlock opened his mouth, prepared to rattle off something about receiving a knighthood for solving a case. But then he realized something. The only reason he would have to lie to John about what he desires is because John is who he desires. What if that was the reason that John lied to him? Because he desires Sherlock?
It was a risk. A huge risk. But Sherlock had to trust in his ability to reason, even now when he might otherwise consider John to be his “crack in a high-powered lens.” Sherlock looked over at John, who was gazing at him with an expression of…curiosity? Anticipation? Hope? “I see the two of us…on our wedding day.”
John stared at him, his eyes widening slightly. Sherlock forced himself to breathe, to keep his expression impassive. John licked his lips again, and then smiled softly. “So…it is our future, after all.”
I think my favorite Martin expression in the entire show is the one right after Sholto says from behind the door, “Mr. Holmes, you and I are similar, I think.”
It’s one of the most damning expressions in the show, like… why would he make THAT face if it were just a statement of how Sherlock and Sholto are platonically similar? Most people just think it’s neat when their friends meet each other and realize they’re similar, but John’s face is just like, “HAH THIS IS REALLY MY FUCKING LIFE, I WILL NEVER ESCAPE”
24 hours after I brought her home, I got a mindblowing job offer. Since I adopted her nine years ago, my life has become an amusement park. She has brought me good luck ever since I took her into my home.
I’m telling you, there’s something about this animal. Good fortune follows her everywhere.
I don’t want to be selfish. I have everything I need and then some. So, I’m sharing her with you.
