John sees that Irene (the woman he is so jealous of, he has counted every single text she has sent Sherlock) is alive, and the very first thing that comes out of his mouth is, “Tell him you’re alive.

People talk about how selfless Sherlock was in Season Three, willing to give John up to Mary, willing to plan his wedding, if that is what would make John happy.  And he was.  He unquestionably was.  But we forget about John in Season 2.  It’s clear from this episode that they are both falling in love with one another.  Even strangers like Irene instantly pick up on it.  And yet the first thing John says here, is, “Tell him you’re alive.”

Most people would try to keep her away.  John makes it clear he’s not happy to see her.  But, he thinks that Sherlock is in love with Irene and grieving her, and his first priority is that Sherlock stop hurting.  He would give up any chance he ever had with Sherlock to ensure that he stopped hurting.

And in fact, it is from this point on that John stops dating.  So not only is John willing to give up any chances at another relationship for himself, and to commit himself fully to Sherlock, without knowing if his feelings will ever be returned, BUT he is also willing to give Sherlock up to someone else if that is what is truly makes Sherlock happy.

I mean that is some hardcore selflessness right there!

John is a good man, who loves Sherlock very much.  He’s just dealing with so much after The Fall.  If you spent two years thinking that the man you loved, and to whom you gave everything you could think to give them, still killed themselves, because you somehow failed in letting them know that they were worthy, and valuable, and loved, and if you had to watch that person actually commit the act.  You had to watch them jump to their death right  in front of you, you saw them crushed and bloody on the pavement, you held their lifeless hand in yours…  That would probably fuck you up pretty badly too.

I love John Watson so damn much.

I’m crying

Exactly

Okay um ouch

My heart, there it goes, goodbye.

Not to mention:

-Refusing money to spy on Sherlock, even though he clearly needs it

-Shooting someone for Sherlock, with no real guarantee of not being caught

-Never once pushing his attentions on Sherlock after (what he thinks is) an initial refusal, even though he’s desperately in love

-Risking his life by threatening Moriarty just to give Sherlock some chance to escape

-Immediately giving up his Christmas plans when it seems Sherlock might relapse

Getting arrested after punching the chief superintendent just for insulting Sherlock

-Generally giving up his work, sleep, and relationships whenever Sherlock needs him

If Sherlock is the head and John is the heart, well… it’s a damn good heart.

I love this post. I love you all for appreciating Jawn.

He’s the best.

I love this! John needs more appreciation.
