Howdy Papyrus theorist
(like @papyrus-knows @sharada-n @uselessshoelacefacts and many others), I was wondering if any of you had consider that Papyrus
might be suffering from mania? I have been thinking this since I for the first time saw a list of symptoms
for mania and I have found at least one theory post that agree with
this assessment. As @insanelyaddstates
in their post, the symptoms goes as such:Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity : “The Great Papyrus“
Decreased need for sleep (e.g., feels rested after 3 hours of sleep.) : Well that would explain why he calls sleeping napping, he only require the time of a long nap to feel rested.
More talkative than usual or pressure to keep talking. : Well, he apparently
does have the most lines in the game after Chara.Flights of ideas or subjective experience that thoughts are racing. : I would argue this
could be the case, for instance, when he improves a puzzle by arranging the
snow to look more like his face, he seem to have been too distracted/preoccupied
to notice the snow froze to the ground as he is doing it. I think also could tight
back into why he sometimes tell conflicting stories, he might be so emerged in
his current thought that he is unaware of anything beside the flow of that
thought.Increase in goal directed activity, or psychomotor acceleration. : Papyrus is a
human-hunting FANATIC (If Sans is to be believed), to serve the end goal of joining
the royal guard.Distractibility (too easily drawn to unimportant or irrelevant external stimuli). : He has his a few
moments of this in some calls I would say. He did painted the danger bright and
added rope to make it look “MORE DRAMATIC” (I mean I would call that showing
attention to detail, but mileage may vary).Excessive involvement in activities that have a high degree for
painful consequences.(e.g., extravagant shopping, sexual adventures or
improbable commercial schemes) : The fact that he risk
his life to stop and show Frisk mercy in the genocide run gives me the
impression that Papyrus does not really concern himself with painful
consequences (or at least it does in no way stop him from doing what he thinks is right). In order to be classified at least 3 or 4 of these has to be
consistently present. Because I see all of them at least somewhat in him, I would say it is safe to assume that he got mania. But because
it seemingly does little to impair function or decrease quality of his life, it might be more accurate to say has hypomania, which is a
milder form . Although
if this behavior is the reason people treat him like child, it is causing
obvious difficulties at work and in his social relationships. The most characteristic sign of mania is feeling either unusually “high” and optimistic or extremely irritable. Papyrus express a wide array of emotion in the game, but the two he fluctuate between the most is joy and annoyance.
Mania is also associated with creativity and artistic talent, which
Papyrus is plenty, proven by all the things he make and all unique
things he has to say.Another symptom of mania restlessness and
difficulty relaxing, which got me thinking of this line from one of the phone calls; “I WOULD
NEVER TAKE A VACATION FOR ANY REASON”.As a side note, I recall reading punning is also something people with
mania tend to do.Mania is often conceived as a “mirror image” to depression. If Sans is depressed when it would be quite fitting for Papyrus to have mania, as Sans and Papyrus is by design each other’s foil.
Mania might also explain why he can say so many potentially depressing things with a smile (“I WANT TO MEET DEATH…”); he is so predisposed to feel euphoria most of the time, to the point that negative thoughts do not affect his cheerfulness.
If he
continues to suffer from prolonged unresolved hypomania, he will run the risk of developing full mania, and cross that “line” without even realizing he has done so.What do you guys think, sounds plausible?

TLDR: Both skelebroes are mentally ill?
“Both skelebros are mentally ill” everyone in undertale is mentally ill actually
In all seriousness I definitely agree with all of this, and I like how thoroughly researched it is. I don’t know a lot about mania or hypomania, so I don’t have much to add here.
Mind blown.
